Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Chief Tammy Cook-Searson was the recipient of an honourary degree in Applied Studies by Saskatchewan Polytechnic last week.

“It was really nice when I received the call from Sask. Polytechnic letting me know I was nominated to receive the honourary degree,” she said.

“I was really honoured to be chosen and I am really honoured to be the honourary recipient this year. I was really honoured to share the stage with 540 graduates in Prince Albert. It was a really nice ceremony.”

Honourary degree recipients often model the institution’s vision and values, and Sask. Polytech notes that the contributions made by the members of this influential group help cultivate an educational environment focused on applied learning and innovative research to empower a better Saskatchewan, and inspire success in every learning journey.

Cook-Searson has been the chief of the LLRIB since 2005 and she holds other honourary titles as well including a Doctorate of Law from the University of Regina, as well as an honourary Diploma in Business from the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies. She also holds a Diploma in Management.

She is currently working towards a Masters of Business Administration from Athabasca University and she expects to be finished the requirements for it by the end of September.

“Right now, I am doing my final paper, which is an applied project,” Cook-Searson said.

“I am doing it on mental health, addictions and substance abuse. I am doing a lot of research on that right now.”

Cook-Searson serves on the boards of the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, Cameco Corporation, Saskatoon Airport Authority and the Assembly of First Nations. She is also an active member of the Prince Albert Grand Council and Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations.

Cook-Searson has also been recognized with several accolades including the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business – Woman in Leadership Award, the Canadian Armed Forces Special Service Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

“We are proud to recognize Chief Cook-Searson’s exceptional accomplishments and extend our heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved honour,” said Dr. Larry Rosia, Sask. Polytechnic President and CEO in a media release.

“Chief Tammy’s commitment to championing economic prosperity and steadfast advocacy on Indigenous issues is inspiring. Her leadership has had a tremendous impact and continues to shape her community and our province.”
