Renovations of Harry Jerome Track, Max Clunie Field on schedule and on budget

The renovation and reconstruction of Prince Albert’s Harry Jerome Track and Max Clunie Field is well underway and scheduled to be completed on time.

Work on the project began immediately after the high school football season ended in mid-October with crews excavating the field and its irrigation systems.

“They were able to excavate that and put in the first layer of drainage rock and drainage system underneath,” explained Mike Hurd, the Superintendent of Facilities for the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division. “At this point right now, the football field is almost ready for turf.”

“The track, we removed the old asphalt and rubber and they’ve excavated down a couple of feet deep and they’re putting in a base gravel layer and building that back up,” he continued. “There’s a concrete curve that has to go around the inside of the track that has to get done and then two layers of asphalt. So hopefully, maybe by mid or the end of next week, that will be ready for asphalt.”

He added that the installation of the turf is set to begin on July 2 while the rubber for the track is scheduled to start being laid on Aug. 1.

Hurd said that overall, the construction process, which is being done by BRODA Group, has been smooth sailing aside from some delays because of rain.

“We’ve had a few setbacks as far as weather goes, but not a lot so far – they’ve been able to work right through. Having done all the demolition in the fall, they weren’t dealing with all the mud of digging that grass and that irrigation out and as you know, we had a wet spring so that helped a lot.”

From a financial standpoint, Hurd said that the project is right where they expected it to be.

“There’s always a few little surprises when you’re dealing with – from talking with the folks at BRODA when you’re dealing with dirt, you don’t always know what’s underneath there so there could be a few little setbacks and surprises but at this point, I think we’re very close where we need to be.”

The project is expected to be completed on Aug. 31 with football games slated to begin as early as Sept. 6.
