Getting closer

P.A. Predators hope to keep rolling against Regina

A 15-6 win over Saskatoon last weekend has propelled the U21 Prince Albert Predators lacrosse team to the cusp of representing Saskatchewan at the Junior B National Lacrosse Championships.

The Predators will play a best-of-three series against the Regina-based Queen City Kings beginning Friday night with Game 1 at Kinsmen Arena in Prince Albert. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be played in Regina. The winner of that series will represent the province at nationals.

“I think having Game 1 at home this Friday is huge for us, especially after playing Saskatoon last weekend, we kind of know the level we have to be at to play at that level now,” said Predators Head Coach Lucas Wells. “I’m excited for the fans to see and I’m excited for P.A. Lacrosse as well. All these kids have grown up playing lacrosse in P.A., and don’t have anybody that’s from Saskatoon or from any other location, we’re strictly a Prince Albert team. We’re homegrown.”

A Prince Albert-based lacrosse team has never represented the province on the national stage.

Wells added that the atmosphere at Kinsmen Arena could be a difference maker for his team.

“I think we’re going to have to use the energy from the fans and use that to our advantage,” Wells said. “I don’t think that Regina has played in a barn where it is that loud and that boisterous, so I think that they’re going to be put on their heels and we’re going to have to take advantage of that.”

“We’re used to playing in an environment like this, so it’s not going to affect us as much. We just have to try to build off the energy and try to keep our heads level and not get too high or not get too low.”

Friday’s game begins at 7:30 p.m.
