City to plow snow surplus back into savings

May 31, 2024 | 4:50 PM

A lack of snow last year has left the City of Prince Albert with some extra money in its snow clearing budget.

Council will be presented with a breakdown of the revenue and expenses on Monday, but is limited to what it can do with the money because of how it is collected.

The extra $470,000 was collected by a special snow tax on properties and must be spent on snow clearing efforts in the future.

In 2023, the city collected $1,557,000 in snow tax revenue, expecting much of it would be spent clearing snow.

The actual cost of clearing snow last year was just over $1 million.

According to the memo on the agenda, when there is excess revenue from a special tax, council must also notify the public where it plans to put the money.

In this case, the plan is to put the money back into the snow reserve, which has a deficit from previous year.

Council meets on Monday at 5:00 pm.
