Racine seeking NDP nomination in Sask. Rivers

May 28, 2024 | 11:00 AM

A new candidate has emerged in the Saskatchewan Rivers riding ahead of this fall’s provincial election.

On Tuesday, Doug Racine announced his intention to seek the Saskatchewan NDP nomination in the riding that covers the area immediately north of Prince Albert.

The nomination will take place on July 24 at Nordale Hall in Prince Albert.

“Under the Saskatchewan Party’s watch health care has crumbled, our children’s education has taken a second seat to the corporate buddies of the Sask Party, but the biggest issue in this election might very well be “honesty and integrity” – the SUP and SP seem to be in short supply of both — enough is enough!” said Racine in a news release sent out Wednesday.

Racine, a military veteran, currently lives in the Sask. Rivers riding with his wife. He practiced law for a quarter century in Saskatoon, founding Aboriginal Law Group and working primarily in Indigenous law, most recently representing Métis communities regarding forestry in Northern Saskatchewan.

Racine’s family has strong ties to the NDP, with his grandmother working on Tommy Douglas’ election campaigns.

Also running in Sask. Rivers is the incumbent Nadine Wilson of the newly created Sask. United Party, and Eric Schmalz of the Sask. Party, who is the current reeve of the RM of Prince Albert.

Racine’s announcement comes after Prince Albert – Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave announced earlier this week that he would not be seeking re-election for the Sask Party in the upcoming election.
