May 28, 2024 | 3:26 PM

Alcohol, drugs, and a high rate of speed are all believed to be factors in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two people early Tuesday morning, including a man from Meadow Lake.

The collision happened at around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Range Road 130 and Highway 28, near the village of Vilna in Smoky Lake County.

Alberta RCMP said an SUV was travelling at a high rate of speed on Range Road 130 and blew through a stop sign, colliding with a sedan travelling east on Highway 28.

The sedan driver, a 39-year-old woman from Cold Lake, Alta., was pronounced dead at the scene while the passenger, a 36-year-old man from Meadow Lake, Sask., died after being flown by STARS air ambulance to hospital.

The driver of the SUV, who was not identified by police in a news release, was hospitalized with serious life-threatening injuries. Police suspect that they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

RCMP added that two other passengers in the SUV were also transported to hospital with varying levels of injuries.
