The Prince Albert men’s basketball league has a champion.

The Dependables squad from Melfort won Thursday night’s final, dethroning the defending champions Prince Town by a final score of 79-70.

It was the first loss for Prince Town in two full seasons.

Thursday night’s game was played in CPAC at Carlton Comprehensive High School. League organizer Denny Heathen, who also plays for Prince Town, and who revived the league last year after a six year absence, told paNOW he continues to get very positive feedback.

‘Every single team was very happy with the results. Yes there were more teams this year. We will be running it again next year,” he said.

Featuring eight teams this season, two more than last year, the season started back in February. Heathen confirmed one of the biggest changes he made was laying down the rules before the season started and also having wavers signed for young players.

“We want to encourage the sport of basketball to young players that are mature enough,” he said, noting the youngest player this year was 17.

When Heathen spoke to paNOW last year, he had mentioned a personal positive change in his own life. Having sobered up two years prior, he realized there’s a lot of men out there that need a positive way to release their stress.

In addition to the awarding of the trophy to the winning team, $500 was also raised which was donated back to Carlton Comprehensive High School.
