Less than a week from the inaugural Big River Bash, members of the Red Wolf Club Boxing Club in Prince Albert have received a nice tune up.

The Kopas boxing event, Series 7, was held last weekend at the Dakota Dunes Casino and two local boxers competed.

Devon Masuskapoe beat Nazarii Pochkya (71kg) and Cole Ahenakew narrowly lost out to Rabil Issa. Back in the gym on Tuesday, Ahenakew told paNOW he was very familiar with his opponent, having sparred with him a number of times.

“It was different fighting him, but I had a lot of fun doing it,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for him, we both pushed each other.”

Ahenakew has roughly 30 fights to his credit, losing only a handful and he confirmed he is hungry for more.

“I wanna get so much experience so I can fight on a national level,” he said.

And more experience he will get, when Ahenakew and other boxers from the Red Wolf Boxing Club compete on June 1 at the Big River Bash. Cruze Watier lives in the community and is looking forward to the experience.

“I’m excited to show everyone my skills, and I’m gonna put on a show,” he said.

The 16-year old has a current amateur record of 4-0 and acknowledged that he’s feeling sharp.

The Big River Bash will be held at the town’s community centre. Noting the huge amount of support received from the community, Red Wolf Head Trainer Braddoch Koch aspires to have as many as 12 fights.

In additions to various clubs coming from Saskatchewan, there’s also one coming from Manitoba and possibly two from the Edmonton area.

Tickets will be available at the door.
