Northern Bears head coach pleased with newest additions

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears welcomed their newest group of signees to Hockeytown North last week, putting pen to paper with six new players for the upcoming season.

The club’s Head Coach Steve Young told paNOW that he’s happy with the newest batch of Bears.

“I thought we had a strong camp and some of the players we’ve signed thus far, we believe can contribute to our hockey club immediately starting into this upcoming season, which is exciting for the team and exciting for us,” he said.

The six new additions fill the six gaps left in their roster from last season, which saw Raelyn Vezeau, Bree Purcell, Maci Nowosad, Tristyn Endicott, and Julia Cey age out, and Kinley Brassard sign with the Saskatoon Stars.

Among the new faces donning the Black and Orange next season are Londyn Hoffman, Olivia Trann, Aliya Clarke, Rowen Clement, Jersie Andersen, and Zoey Krienke, all of whom are 2009-born players.

Young explained why the organization signed younger players this offseason rather than trying to gain experience.

“I think one, you look for players in your area for sure, and that’s not just in Prince Albert but in surrounding areas like Shellbrook, Warman, those types of areas. Then you look at the years of players that we have coming back that will be graduating and you want to mix younger players in, so you don’t lose all your players at once. There is some strategy to it but at the same time, the players that we did sign are players that want to be here in Prince Albert.”

He added that he expects a lot of parity in the league this year and is looking forward to getting back on the ice with the team in August for fall camp.
