A special event is being planned to welcome home Rebecca Strong, after winning Canada’s Got Talent – and $1 million, several days ago.

Strong, a Black Lake Denesuiline Nation member, ‘captures the hearts of viewers nationwide’, said the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) as it announced her welcome home event for Monday, May 20.

“Rebecca has truly captured hearts across the nation, and we couldn’t be prouder. She represents not only Black Lake but the deep-rooted traditions of the Dene people on a grand national platform. Her victory is a powerful demonstration of what hard work and community support can achieve, setting an inspiring example for our youth,” said Chief Coreen Sayazie of Black Lake Denesuline Nation.

Residents are asked to go to the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre at 3 p.m. on Monday and find creative ways to welcome Strong home from Niagara Falls, where the finale was held, such as making posters or signs.

“Rebecca Strong’s victory is not just a personal win; it’s an inspiration for all young Canadians. Her success shows that with dedication and talent, dreams are achievable. We’re excited to see Rebecca as a role model, urging youth across Canada, especially in northern Saskatchewan, to chase their dreams,” said Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte of the Prince Albert Grand Council.

Recently, the PAGC has also celebrated the success of another young member, Pavel McKenzie of Cumberland House. McKenzie plays hockey for the Moose Jaw Warriors, which just won the top prize in major junior hockey, the Memorial Cup.

He is also ranked 170th in the upcoming entry draft for the NHL, which happens on June 28.
