Teachers renew sanctions for fall

May 16, 2024 | 8:17 PM

Even as Saskatchewan teachers resume bargaining with the province, the STF has a new mandate to keep sanctions going in the fall if no deal is reached.

In a news release posted to their website on Thursday evening, the STF said that 83 per cent of teachers opted to vote on renewed sanctions in the fall. Of those that voted, 95 per cent were in favour of continuing sanctions that include going as far as walking out of class.

“We welcome the resumption of negotiations this week, and we are optimistic that teachers’ decisive rejection of the government’s contract offer, and this renewed sanctions mandate, will serve as a wake-up call,” said STF President Samantha Becotte in the release.

Talks resumed on Wednesday and continued today, the last day of the current sitting of the legislature. They are also planned to continue tomorrow.

If bargaining reaches another impasse, as it has done several times in the last year, teachers will again give 48 hours notice of any sanctions they choose to put in place.

So far, job action has been mainly limited to withdrawing supervision and participation in extra-curricular activities.

Becotte re-iterated that the main negotiation points continue to be class size and complexity.

She also said that in order to respect the bargaining process, no further comment would be given while negotiations continue.
