A goalie who played one season in Prince Albert is being honoured for his perseverance last season in the NHL.

The league announced on Wednesday that Connor Ingram, who played with the Arizona Coyotes last season, is this year’s winner of the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy.

The award recognizes the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” It was presented by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) to honour the late Bill Masterton.

Ingram almost retired due to an undiagnosed obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and lingering depression before he sought help through the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance program in 2021.

“Connor has not only excelled on the ice but has emerged as an inspiration to hockey players across the globe as he continues to tell his story and emphasize the importance of seeking support during life’s darkest moments,” said Utah General Manager Bill Armstrong in a statement. “We are immensely proud of Connor and honored to have him represent our team as this year’s winner.”

Ingram posted a 23-21-3 record, 2.91 goals-against average, .907 save percentage and tied for a league-best six shutouts in 50 appearances for Arizona in 2023-24.

He was claimed off waivers by Arizona in October 2022 and appeared in 27 games for the club in 2022-23 before establishing himself as the Coyotes’ starting netminder this past season.

He’s expected to return as the starting goaltender as the team plays in its new home in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ingram, from Saskatoon, played one season with the Prince Albert Mintos in 2013-14 where he played 23 games, winning 16 and posting a 1.98 Goals Against Average and .928 Save Percentage with two shutouts.

He played seven games in the 2014 playoffs as the Mintos lost in the semi-finals to the Battlefords AAA Stars.

Ingram will be presented the award during the 2024 NHL Awards in Las Vegas, NV on Thursday, June 27.
