Creighton mayor says fire in Manitoba thankfully having little impact

May 16, 2024 | 7:39 AM

There is some positive news on the wildfire front from the town of Creighton.

The out-of-control fire east of Flin Flon, MB, is not affecting the community much. The fire was first detected on May 9 and has grown to about 31,600 hectares.

“It’s not bad, we’re not in any immediate danger,” Mayor Bruce Fidler told northeastNOW. “The winds have been blowing…in a good direction for us, so it’s kind of moving away from town and blowing the majority of the smoke away.”

Fidler said the weather forecast is also in their favour. Showers and cooler temperatures are expected over the coming days.

“Unless the winds change drastically, we should be alright for a while, for sure,” said Fidler, who added the smoke has been noticeable off-and-on, though it hasn’t been incredibly strong since the start of the fire thanks to the wind direction.

The town has been in contact with fire officials from Manitoba, and Fidler said they were due to meet with them again on Wednesday.

Residents of Cranberry Portage, MB, southeast of Flin Flon, were forced to evacuate to The Pas on the weekend due to the blaze, which is listed as having been started by natural causes.
