While many of their peers will be out looking for summer jobs or relaxing at the beach, Prince Albert’s Damien Court and Abby Wasutyk will travel to warmer climates and dig up volleyballs.

Wasutyk will join Canada’s U19 squad in July at the Norceca Continental Championship in Honduras. She acknowledged it’s a great opportunity.

“When I was a little girl I always dreamed of being on a national team, and I think it’s really great just to see all my hard work and effort come to reality,” she said.

Wasutyk has been playing volleyball since grade 6 and has played for the St. Mary Marauders and the U18 Huskies team in Saskatoon. Last year she was a part of Canada’s U17 team at the Norceca Continental Championship in St. Catherines, Ont. She acknowledged it’s going to be a different experience in Honduras.

“I am a little nervous but I think it’ll be a great opportunity to learn from,” she said.

The tournament runs from July 14 to 22.

Meanwhile, Damien Court will represent Canada in June at the U17 Boys’ Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico. The grade 10 student told paNOW the opportunity to represent Canada is a big honour.

“I’m really excited to meet all my teammates and go out and compete out there in Mexico. And I’m just really thankful for the opportunity,” he said.

In addition to playing for the Crusaders, Court also plays club volleyball for the 17 Smashing Bananas. His trip to Mexico will represent his first time playing for Canada and travelling to a different country.

“I’m hoping to grow as a person, as a player and as a teammate throughout this time but I’m also just really excited for the experience as well,” he said.

The roster was announced this week and the tournament runs from June 15 to 23.

Also in action this week is Reuben Veith, who is playing with Team Canada’s U19 team at the Norceca Continental Championship in Puerto Rico. The tournament runs until May 19.
