Province commits to more affordable housing units in P.A.

The reconstruction of a housing unit destroyed by fire three years ago is a major affordable housing project the Government of Saskatchewan is committing to in Prince Albert.

On Monday, the province announced $3.7 million in funding to build 12 affordable housing units in the city by rebuilding the Meadow Green Manor which was destroyed in a fire in 2021. The development will have four three-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units in a low-rise apartment complex.

“This investment made possible by a strong and growing Saskatchewan economy, demonstrates our commitment to improving housing affordability and better supporting people and families in greatest housing need,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Gene Makowsky said in a release.

Roger Parenteau, Executive Director of Building Operations with the Saskatchewan Housing Authority said he’s pleased with the province’s commitment to this project.

“There’s been a high demand for housing for low-income individuals, and we’re pleased that this project is going to be starting.”

The development will be owned by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) and provide affordable housing to families renting through the Prince Albert Housing Authority.

With the need for affordable housing constantly rising, Parenteau is hopeful the province will commit to other projects.

“We’re always doing an analysis of what the needs are for all cities and towns across the province and Prince Albert is one of those communities that we’re always watching and there is always a growing need and demand for sure and consoled with that.”

Construction for Meadow Green is scheduled to start later this spring and will be finished by June 2025.
