Feeling inspired: art exhibit showcases local youth

May 5, 2024 | 4:00 PM

For Prince Albert’s Siobhan McKinney, the High School Juried Art Show is a great way to get local youth out into the community.

The grade 11 student at Carlton Comprehensive High School is among over 50 artists who contributed pieces this year, and her “Farm House” painting, earned her recognition as Best Emerging Artist.

“I love farms and I love old houses and stuff like that so it’s kind of what I went for,” she told paNOW.

The exhibit runs until June 8 at the Mann Art Gallery but the opening reception and awards presentation was held on Friday night.

Receiving the Best in Show award was Margarita Tymenko for her piece “Jesus our Friend.”

Owen Willie was recognized with the Artistic Innovation Award.

Zyrah Macatuno received the award for Creative Exploration in any Medium.

In the Creative Clay category, the award went to Adrianiel Tagaro.

Juror’s Choice went to Alex McLeod and Isabella Peters won Artistic Achievement Award.

Kain Torgersen and Emily Hrynuik shared the Barb Lacey Memorial Award.

And Naviah Johnson was the first ever recipient of the photography award, sponsored by Northern Image Photographers.

Kiara Levesque, a grade 10 student at Carlton Comprehensive Art School, is a returning artist and explained having her art in a place where so many people can see it is exciting. Her drawing was inspired by a character in a video game she plays.

“She inspired me because she’s so full of colour and so elegant and I thought I could express that really well with watercolour,” she said.

This year’s sponsors list includes Sandra’s Framing and Art Gallery, Prince Albert Council for the Arts, Lemon Yellow Art Studio, Down to Earth Creative Consulting and Facilitation, Prince Albert Arts Board, Kyla Art Group, Northern Image Photographers, and the Barb Lacey Memorial Award.

Noting her own personal excitement at the variety of mediums included this year, the Mann Art Gallery’s Carolyn Carleton told paNOW they are looking to get bigger each year and next year plans to encourage the schools to get started even earlier.

The People’s Choice Award, sponsored by the Kyla Art Group, will be announced on June 8.
