High School Juried Art Show returns with greater focus

May 2, 2024 | 2:00 PM

Showcasing the creativity of local youth across the region, the 13th annual High School Juried Art Show is featuring some new eye-catching attractions.

A new photography category has been added, and there’s also a number of welding pieces. Carolyn Carleton, the Mann Art gallery’s administrative director, told paNOW she is very much looking forward to the exhibit.

“Youth are more willing to express themselves a little more artistically than I think we do as adults so I think it’s really interesting to see how creative they can be and the different mediums and textures they use in their art,” she said.

Carleton attributed the influx of photography submissions to the fact a number of local high schools have added photography clubs. She also noted the Northern Image Photography Club offered to donate the prize.

The opening reception and awards ceremony is taking place on Friday night at the Mann Art Gallery and will feature over 50 captivating artworks.

“We’re very excited to see the variety for this year and every year we just keep trying to build on it a little bit more,” Carleton commented, adding next year they want to encourage the schools to get started even earlier.

The reception starts at 7p.m., and there is no cost to attend, however Carleton is encouraging people to pre-register on their website to ensure there’s enough food.

The exhibited pieces will then be available for public viewing at the Mann Art Gallery until June 8.

“And I just encourage everyone to come out and support our young people,” Carleton said.

This year’s sponsors list includes Sandra’s Framing and Art Gallery, Prince Albert Council for the Arts, Lemon Yellow Art Studio, Down to Earth Creative Consulting and Facilitation, Prince Albert Arts Board, Kyla Art Group, Northern Image Photographers, and the Barb Lacey Memorial Award.
