Old Angus Merasty school site back up for sale

A parcel of land that used to hold the Angus Merasty School is back up for sale, Prince Albert city council heard on Monday.

The site was to be developed into a residential subdivision but the developer has backed away due to the costs.

“We aren’t at a point where anything has been agreed upon,” said Craig Guidinger, director of planning and development.

“What we are recommending this evening is that the EOI be closed so that comes full circle and move forward with next steps.”

In 2021, the city issued a request for expressions of interest and received one from Miller Contracting.

However, pandemic-related inflation first led the business to change their plans from single family homes to multi-family and now backing away from the project.

“We’ll continue to own the land and if any type of a project or any type of an offer comes for that land, it will come to city council,” Guidinger said.

The city got the land by trading another parcel with the Prince Albert Grand Council in 2019. It demolished the building and seeded it to grass.

While some interest has been there for developing the three acres into housing and the city will continue to look for developers, local residents have expressed interest in keeping the space as a green zone.

Staff and council have said that any changes will include giving the people living in the neighbourhood a chance to weigh in.
