It was a successful night to honour the great accomplishments of health care workers and pioneers in Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan.

The Boreal Healthcare Foundation held its Med Gala on Saturday night, a formal, black-tie event that brought the health care community together at the Prince Albert Exhibition Hall.

The gala wasn’t just a celebration but a vital fundraising effort, supporting projects like the ongoing improvements at Victoria Hospital.

The event was supported by many sponsors including Mann-Northway, who was the title sponsor and, in the end, a total of $164,641 was raised for the foundation.

The gala was also an opportunity to introduce two new award categories, one of which, the Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Award, went to Dr. Lalita Malhotra and her late husband, Dr. Tilak Malhotra.

“Dr. Lalita Malhotra has become a cornerstone of our medical community, particularly recognized for her commitment to providing obstetric and gynecological care in northern communities,” the Healthcare Foundation said in a statement.

The Foundation also presented the first-ever Nursing Excellence Award to Tammy Gillis, the nursing unit manager at Victoria Hospital’s emergency department.

Parkland Ambulance was also honoured with the Collaborative Care Award as they mark their 50th anniversary. That award celebrates the outstanding community service and the role Parkland Ambulance plays in emergency and routine patient care throughout the region.

“Our healthcare system thrives on the collective efforts of many dedicated individuals,” said CEO of the Boreal Healthcare Foundation, Cody Barnett. “It’s crucial we recognize all roles within this system, as each contributes uniquely to the health and well-being of Prince Albert.”

This Gala is one of many events through the year the Boreal Healthcare Foundation uses to raise funds and support for the Victoria Hospital and other initiatives in northern Saskatchewan.

The foundation is already getting ready for its next event, the annual Victoria Hospital Charity Golf Classic at Emma Lake Golf Course on June 14.
