Old man winter returns for one more round

Apr 17, 2024 | 4:42 PM

What felt like a late April Fool’s Day joke, was no laughing matter for thousands of people commuting to work on Wednesday, or at home just trying to turn on the coffee pot.

The heavy, wet snow was responsible for a number of power outages and travel advisories.

An outage in the Nipawin area for example, started around 8 a.m. and lasted for over seven hours. Over 1,000 Sask Power customers were affected and a downed line was the reason provided.

A separate outage in in the Christopher Lake, caused by a tree falling onto a power line, affected 95 customers and lasted from about 8:30 a.m to about 1:30 p.m.

There were also outages reported in the Saskatoon and North Battleford areas.

The sloppy weather was also causing issues for travellers and there were numerous reports shared in the morning through social media about the high number of vehicles in the ditch between Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

Within the city limits, Parkland Ambulance responded to four motor vehicle crashes, as well as a couple of slip and fall incidents.

The storm system is moving east and as of 5 p.m., a snowfall warning remained for the northeast region including Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin and Hudson Bay.

A further 5 to 10 cm of snow is forecasted tonight and light snow will continue over the region through Thursday before finally tapering off on Friday.

Total accumulations will be in the 15 to 25 cm range.
