‘It’s going to be miserable out there’: Final blast of winter? What to expect in P.A. region

Apr 15, 2024 | 3:30 PM

It would appear Prince Albert isn’t quite out of the winter woods just yet.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is calling for some winter-like conditions in the P.A. region this week. Meteorologist Brian Proctor said the city can expect both snow and rain over the next few days with a low pressure system developing in Alberta.

“We’ll start seeing generally some periods of rain through much of the day on Tuesday, the amounts are looking like about 10-15 millimetres,” Proctor said. “It’ll start transitioning to wet snow Tuesday night.”

“We’ll start seeing some periods of snow through much of the day on Wednesday into Thursday before tapering off in the afternoon. The amount of snowfall is going to be very interesting and very dependent upon the track of the low. I would think it’s going to be heavy, wet snow to a large degree so it may not amount to as deep of a snowfall as we typically might expect with this kind of a system.”

Proctor estimated that the Prince Albert area will receive anywhere from eight to 15 centimetres of snow this week.

“It’s not going to be a heavy snowfall event, but it’s going to be a fairly significant event from a moisture point of view,” he said.

He added that accumulation levels should be relatively low and that travel won’t be overly impacted.

“I don’t think we’ll see that much accumulation…a lot of the road surfaces and grass surfaces are pretty warm at this point in time. So we’re going to see a lot of melting and a lot of compression on contact with the surface,” said Proctor, adding that warmer temperatures are on the horizon for the weekend.

“So even with how much we get, it’s probably not going to last very long at all, is probably the best way to think about it.”

But Proctor added that strong, blustery winds could make conditions particularly messy.

“I think one of the bigger problems is we’re going to see fairly blustery winds associated with the system coming across as well, so you’re going to see a lot of that snow being blown horizontally as it falls,” he said.

“It’s going to be miserable out there, it’s going to be much cooler than we’ve been experiencing, but I don’t think we’re going to see tremendous amounts of accumulation of snowfall.”

Proctor added that areas to the north and northeast of Prince Albert will likely see more snowfall.
