The Saskatchewan Tree for Life Program

Apr 11, 2024 | 9:21 AM

The Saskatchewan Tree for Life Program was started in 2021 to encourage planting trees to support healthy watersheds across the province. To date, 36,600 trees have been distributed through the program. Funds raised from the program go towards source water protection projects and programming in Saskatchewan. To learn more about some of these initiatives, visit www.saskwatersheds.ca and consider signing up for the monthly newsletter.

By purchasing and planting affordable trees and shrubs from the Tree for Life Program, you will do your part to support healthy watersheds. Trees and shrubs are an important part of the water cycle and keep our lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and aquifers clean. Trees and shrubs also provide shelter, shade and wildlife habitat. In an urban setting, trees keep our storm drains clean and help decrease soil erosion and filter contaminates.

This program supports our vision of people caring for their local watershed, resulting in clean and healthy lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and aquifers that support communities and wildlife for years to come.

How Trees Make a Difference

  • Improve Water Quality – Polluted runoff is filtered by the plants roots before entering our waterbodies
  • Reduce Soil Erosion – Soil is held in place through an immense underground root network
  • Reduce Flooding – The velocity of surface runoff and rainwater is reduced
  • Mitigate Climate Change Impacts – Carbon is stored and oxygen is released back into the air. Young trees absorb CO2 at a rate of 13 pounds per tree each year. Trees reach their most productive stage of carbon storage at about 10 years, at which point they are estimated to absorb 48 pounds of CO2 per year.
  • Provide Wildlife Habitat – Land and aquatic organisms are provided with food and shelter
  • Provide shade, shelter, and privacy to properties and buildings – Trees can act as windbreaks and shelterbelts
  • Increase Property Values
  • Adds Beauty to Your Community

The Saskatchewan Tree for Life Program was created by the Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds (SAW), a non-profit organization with a mission to ensure there will be a healthy source water supply of ground and surface water for future generations in Saskatchewan.

SAW envisions people caring for their local watershed, resulting in clean and healthy lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and aquifers that will support communities and wildlife for years to come.
