P.A. wrestlers take home medals from nationals

Heavyweight wrestler Owen Ferchuk is coming home to Prince Albert with two bronze medals after competing at nationals in the U19 Heavyweight category in Mississauga, Ontario.

“I got bronze in Freestyle and bronze in Greco,” said the 17-year-old Ferchuk. Really it means everything. Everything you did through out the season to get you where you are. And just knowing that everything paid off, everything you did in the weight room and on the mats.”

“And then even off the mats, preparing yourself and eating right, having a good diet.”

The medals put a cap on a very successful season for Ferchuk, who also won gold at provincials and regionals earlier this year.

He said wrestling still has room to grow in Canada.

“I just think wrestling is a very underappreciated sport that doesn’t get enough value as it should,” said Ferchuk, who got into the sport through playing football. “I think it’s definitely underdeveloped in Canada and Saskatchewan, but over the years you definitely have seen more people joining and it getting more love from the community.”

Ferchuk wasn’t the only P.A. wrestler to pick up some hardware, as Kaley Clarke won a gold medal at nationals, also in the U19 age group.

Ferchuk said he’s looking forward to training this off-season and preparing for summer camps.
