New Chief elected at James Smith

After nearly 16 years, members of James Smith First Nation have elected a new Chief.

Kirby Constant was declared the winner of Thursday’s band election with 208 votes.

“Thank you deeply for entrusting me with the honor of being your Chief. Your support and belief in me fuel my commitment to lead our community towards a brighter future,” Constant said in a post to social media. “Together, we will face challenges, embrace changes, and work tirelessly to make our home a place of prosperity and unity. I am ready to listen, serve, and lead with our shared dreams at the forefront. Let’s move forward together, shaping a legacy that generations to come will be proud of.”

Wally Burns, the incumbent, finished second with 155 votes.

Constant’s campaign commitments included the crafting of an economic strategy rooted in community values and environmental stewardship.

He explained this approach would investigate avenues such as green energy ventures, sustainable farming practices, and eco-tourism projects.

Constant also mentioned the launch of comprehensive programs aimed at preserving and revitalizing language, arts, and cultural practices.

He indicated this would involve partnerships with elders and knowledge keepers.

Constant also stressed the importance of Health and Wellness and suggested the Implementation of holistic health initiatives that address both physical and mental health needs, with a particular focus on culturally sensitive healthcare services, mental health support, and substance abuse programs.

And with respect to youth, Constant, a father himself, mentioned the strengthening of educational opportunities that are culturally relevant and accessible to all community members.

Initiatives would focus on mentorship programs, vocational training, and scholarships aimed at empowering youth to pursue higher education and meaningful careers within and outside the community.

Also elected on Thursday are the community’s four headpersons and they are Alvin Moostoos, Justin Burns, Gerald McKay and Tanya Moostoos.

All but Tanya Moostoos were incumbents.
