Nothing says its official like being piped into the ceremony that acknowledges a person is Citizen of the Year and that was the experience of Barry Brezden on Friday evening.

Brezden, who found out he was this year’s Citizen of the Year at the end of 2023, had his honour formalized at a banquet at the Coronet Hotel, entering the room with full pageantry in the form of a bag piper.

He was nominated for the honour by Sandra Greenwood, who is part of the Lakeland district of the Saskatchewan Senior’s Fitness Association and noticed the amount of energy and time Brezden brought to his role as chairperson.

“He sets the bar and he goes night and day. Saturdays aren’t exempt. Nothing is exempt and [with] so much work, he deserves it,” said Greenwood.

Brezden himself has downplayed his own role, saying anything he does it the result of teamwork and the help of others.

Despite the formality of the entrance in which he was followed by Publisher Donna Pfeil of the Daily-Herald, head of the Kinsmen chapter, Wes Moore and Mayor Greg Dionne, the evening was about fun as well.

Brezden and fellow thespian Adrianna Boucher entertained the room with an improv skit while waiting for the food to arrive.

The Citizen of the Year is a joint initiative of the Daily Herald and the Kinsmen Club of Prince Albert.
