More than a mouthful: Poutine Week returns to Prince Albert

Mar 15, 2024 | 3:22 PM

It has begun once again. Friday marks the start of the race for one of Prince Albert’s most coveted prizes – The Gravy Bowl.

Poutine Week runs from March 15 to 24 and has become a hallmark fundraiser, said Natasha Thomson of Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

“We’re very excited about the third annual P.A. Poutine Week,” said Thomson. “We have nine restaurants around the city that created a special dish just for this event that is not usually on their menu.”

Out of every poutine sold, the Big Brothers/Sisters will get $4.

Last year, the fundraiser earned the group $4,000, which helps them with their objective of matching youth with mentors in the community.

Thomson said that 12 families have been matched and another 12 youth are waiting for mentors.

As the event grows in popularity, so do the odds that more money will be raised.

“We noticed that a lot of people around Prince Albert have been asking about this and are very excited to go out and try one or several of the poutines,” she said.

People who want to participate in the contest are asked to take a photo of their poutine, share it on Facebook or Instagram, and tag the restaurant while using the hashtag #papoutineweek.

Those people will be entered to win a daily gift card giveaway of $25.

Participating restaurants are getting more creative with their poutines.

Amongst the nine participants this year are a tandoori chicken poutine at Between the Buns, pepperoni pizza poutine from Boston Pizza, bang bang chicken poutine at Lulu’s Kitchen, le boeuf poutine from Mr. Mikes, poutine mac attack at Original Joe’s, loaded burger poutine from Ricky’s, pulled pork poutine at the Rock & Iron, chili and cheese nacho poutine form Shananigan’s, and sweet and salty poutine at the Knotty Pine Bistro.

Knotty Pine is so far the undefeated champion with two Gravy Bowls under its belt.
