Indigenous students looking to become fluent in their own language will have the opportunity following the recent announcement by the province.

First Nations University of Canada will receive a boost of $108,000 that will help the Hatchet Lake Denesuline Nation’s Dene Teacher Education Program (DTEP).

In a release from Advanced Education, Bernadette Besskkaystare, a student in the Dene Teacher Education Program said: “This is a great opportunity because we can take classes here in our community instead of leaving and be less stressed when we are here with our families.”

Besskkaystare added having the ability to speak will make a difference in the community.

In the last school year, there was a 40 per cent increase students who enrolled in Indigenous Teacher Education Programs around the northern part of the province and according to Advanced Education Minister Gordon Wyant, the government is “proud” of the partnership.

“Creating more opportunities for Indigenous students to access post-secondary education, particularly those living in rural and remote areas, is a priority for the Government of Saskatchewan,” he said in the release.

Once the students have graduated, they will be able to teach kindergarten to Grade 12 in their respective languages and with an eye for cultural practices.

“It is important that we keep our Denesuline language alive because there are many young people who cannot speak it. This teaching program will make a big difference in a few years for the community.”
