Northern Bears drop Game 1 in overtime after late comeback

Mar 9, 2024 | 12:47 PM

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears have their backs against the wall following their Game 1 overtime loss on Friday night in their best-of-three playoff series against Notre Dame.

The Bears made the trek south to Wilcox to kick off the series where the Hounds managed to squeak out a 3-2 win in extras despite a late surge in the third period by Prince Albert.

With Notre Dame up 2-0 entering the final frame, Tristyn Endicott shifted the tides less than a minute in by taking a pass from Julia Cey and putting home her first career playoff goal.

It remained 2-1 for the remainder of the period before P.A. cashed in with a buzzer-beater. With five ticks left, Endicott picked up her second point of the night by connecting a pass with Ella Clarke who slotted the tying marker to send the game to O.T.

From there, it was Notre Dame’s Sara Harbus who played the hero scoring the game-winner to put the Hounds on the verge of advancing to the second round, while the Northern Bears now face elimination.

Also scoring for Notre Dame in the contest was Felicia An and Eden Carius while former Bear Sasha Malenfant led the assist column with two, and Carius, Spring Mosset, Kiara Perrett, and Tianna Wiebe each had one.

In goal for Notre Dame was Schay Camphaug making 31 saves while Northern Bears netminder Annika Neufeldt registered 40 in the loss.

The series now shifts to Prince Albert on Sunday night, when the Bears welcome the Hounds to the Art Hauser Centre for do-or-die Game 2. Puck drop is set for 7:00.
