Bowling has been a lifetime sport for Margaret Dreaver.

The Prince Albert native recently returned home after competing for Team Saskatchewan at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary, where she won a bronze medal with her bowling team.

“It was lots of fun getting picked to go to Calgary for the Games,” said Dreaver, who has been bowling for 51 years. “We were part of a team and when we put a team together it means that we will stick together as a team.”

“We were up against some tough teams, like Ontario and other teams. We won the bronze and we were happy about it.”

Dreaver said she’s enjoyed being a part of the bowling community for as long as she has.

“Just getting to know all the athletes, coaches, volunteers. Bowling is my favourite sport,” said Dreaver, adding she hopes to continue competing in the future.

Bre Eberle with Special Olympics Saskatchewan said it was a good showing overall for the province at the Games, with Sask athletes competing in eight different sports.

“We got a total of 29 medals through out so that was huge,” said Eberle. “Everyone on our team got a medal except the two figure skating athletes but they did really well in their placing. One of them got fourth which is really good and a personal best for her, and then the other one got fifth and that was also a personal best for her, so very well done.”

Saskatchewan finished seventh in the overall medal standings compared to other provinces.

“We had a really good time and all of the athletes performed very well,” said Eberle, adding that several of the athletes will have an opportunity to compete at the worlds coming up in Italy in 2025.
