Most of Second Avenue to be re-paved in next two years

An unexpected approval from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways will see almost all of Prince Albert’s Second Avenue be re-surfaced, likely in 2025.

The project will see most of the north and southbound lanes of the street re-done, starting at 17th Street West and running to Marquis Road.

“This is unexpected,” said Mayor Greg Dionne during Monday’s council meeting, during which councillors approved an agreement which would have the province pay for 70 per cent of the cost.

While it is a street, Second Avenue is also a highway and is being redone under the Urban Highway Connector Program, which will kick in $660,000.

The city roads department says that is a very busy stretch of road.

“This is a major thoroughfare with 21,000 vehicles per day. It’s also a heavy haul route which means some of the lanes are getting ruts,” said Jeff Da Silva, director of public works.

The road will not be dug up and built again. Instead, the plan is to re-surface the top.

Because they were not expecting the money to come as quickly as it did after applying in 2022, staff did not have time to prepare the project for this year’s construction program so it will likely go ahead in 2025.

Some councillors discussed the need to also focus some work on Marquis Road, which is not an urban highway and would be paid for by the city itself.
