‘You need to take this extremely seriously’: Prince Albert robbery suspect released on bail

One of three teenagers arrested after an attempted armed robbery in Prince Albert, has been released from custody, with a number of conditions including an up front payment from his family of $250.

Daniel English, who was 18 at the time of his arrest last week, appeared by video from the Prince Albert Correctional Centre, when his case was discussed Wednesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

His release was based on consent from the Crown.

“This is a very serious charge,” noted Judge Hugh Harradence, before turning to English, and cautioning him to follow the conditions that include keeping the peace and not possessing any firearms.

“You need to take this extremely seriously,” he told English.

The attempted robbery occurred on the night of Feb. 21. According to Prince Albert Police, four people were seen demanding items from two other people in a parking lot in the 2800 Block of Sixth Avenue East.

Officers eventually intervened and moved to apprehend one of the suspects, when the other three fled the scene.

One suspect was arrested after a pursuit by foot with the others found thanks to help from the Canine Unit. Later, officers found a firearm used in the attempted robbery as well as a knife.

While the location of the incident was not made clear by police, English’s release conditions include not being at Carlton Court Plaza. He is scheduled to be back in court March 27.

Also in court on Wednesday, were several members of English’s family, including his mother who is acting as his surety. Judge Harradence asked her if she understood her responsibility to report bad behaviour, and inquired if she was able to do that as his mother. She replied she did understand the terms.

“I’d rather do it this way, then have him stuck in there,” she said.

One of the co-accused, Cashton Bear-Paquette, was in court earlier this week and had his matters adjourned to Mar. 4.

A 17-year-old was also arrested and similarily to both English and Bear-Paquette, faces the robbery charge, as well as carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon. He’s back in court on March 1. The youth’s identity is protected by a standard publication ban.
