P.A. Food Bank receives record-breaking $25K donation

Feb 26, 2024 | 3:11 PM

The Prince Albert Food Bank has just received its biggest donation ever.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) and Northern Lights Casino are donating $25,000 to the non-profit.

Kim Scruby, the executive director of the Food Bank, told reporters the money will be a huge help.

“We’re facing the same pressures with inflation as everyone else is,” he said.

Keeping up with the ever-changing food prices is just one struggle for the Food Bank as they’re also helping a record number of people. Scruby mentioned when he first started they were handing out around 700 hampers a month, but recently they had one month where they gave out over 1,300 hampers.

The donation from SIGA and the casino also couldn’t have come at a better time as the non-profit just found out the roof of their warehouse needs repair.

“It’ll free up other money to fill up the shelves for the community,” said Scruby.

Meanwhile, this donation is part of a new campaign by SIGA to help with food security across the province.

In total, they’re donating $225,000 with food banks in the seven communities SIGA’s casinos operate.

“Nutrition is a big part of what we like to support in the company,” said Zane Hansen, SIGA’s president and CEO.

Part of the funding is also being given to schools to help with their nutrition programs.
