Winter Festival wraps up with King and Queen, Junior Trapper events

Feb 25, 2024 | 6:30 PM

The Prince Albert Winter Festival closed the book on their 60th installment on Sunday, wrapping up the annual festivities with the King & Queen Trapper and Junior Trapper events.

The trapper event is much like a decathlon as competitors participate in a number of mini-events to win points in the total standings, where the person with the highest amount of points after the final mini-event wins the overall trapper event.

The King & Queen Trapper includes events like animal calls, log toss, axe throwing, snowshoe racing, sled pulling, and water boiling, while the Junior Trapper features rope winding, nail pounding, trap setting, and flour bag packing.

Richard Charles from Stanley Mission took home the top prize in the King Trapper and spoke highly of the Prince Albert Winter Festival’s Trapper event.

“This is probably one of the best places to come and compete. This is where the top guys come – if you want to beat the best, you come here.”

Prince Albert’s Clarissa Burns claimed the top prize in the Queen Trapper yet again as she has won every Queen Trapper event to date. However, rookie trapper Gabrielle Ermine finished a close nine points behind her where Burns said she was amazed by her competitor’s performance.

“The competition was really good, I was surprised by our rookie this year. She did very well for her first competition.

In the Junior events, Jandin Thomas from Cumberland House won the U18 King Trapper in his first time competing in the event. Although he entered the competition ‘last minute and unprepared’, he said he gave it his all and was happy to come away on top.

“It’s some pretty good competition, I barely won. It’s a great competition and I’m looking forward to coming again next year.”

Meanwhile, Claudia Cook from La Ronge won the U18 Queen Trapper, winning by 50 points. What makes the win more exciting is she’s just 14 years old, something she said she was proud to accomplish.

“It was fun competing against everyone, I think we all had a great time. It feels awesome to win because I’m younger than everyone else.”
