Fans and participants young and old packed inside the Exhibition Centre on Saturday to witness the annual Prince Albert Winter Festival arm wrestling competition.

The tournament was the second on the circuit for the Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling Association (SAWA) which featured competition for youth, women, and men.

Steve Gaber, SAWA’s president said it’s always a treat to come to P.A. and be a part of the Winter Festival.

“It’s awesome to be out here. We want to keep coming out here and keep putting it on, it’s a great event and we love to see new faces. We want the sport to grow and we love coming out here.”

Gaber, who hails from Regina, is a six-time running provincial champion and has a gold medal at nationals to go with his credentials. Additionally, he has represented Canada at the world championships not once, but twice.

Although it wasn’t the same pressure as playing at worlds, Gaber took part in the Winter Festival competition and took home the gold in the men’s 210-plus class.

Along with the strong showing of competitors in this year’s tournament, the youth turnout impressed Gaber the most.

“It was great to see [the youth competition]. All the big tournaments like nationals and worlds have youth classes so it’s nice to see the youth [competitors] come out.”

As mentioned, the tournament was the second on SAWA’s circuit for the season where they also go to Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, and Regina to name a few.

The circuit leads towards the SAWA Provincial Championships that are slated for May 4 at the Turvey Centre in Regina.
