Two schools in Prince Albert and another two in the Battlefords area are among the eight schools in the province chosen to be part of a pilot project.

St. John and Queen Mary Schools in Prince Albert and McKitrick and Light of Christ schools in North Battleford are all part of the project.

The goal is to help school staff manage and de-escalate behavioural incidents, according to a news release from the Ministry of Education.

“We look forward to working with the selected schools as they address their specific needs using the Specialized Support Classroom,” Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “In supporting students, teachers and staff, this pilot aims to reduce interruptions in the classroom and provide additional support to the students who need it.”

The supports are supposed to help students self-regulate while trying to mitigate the impact of disruptions in the classroom.

The classroom will have up to 15 students, one teacher and two educational assistants.

Psychologists and counsellors may also be included.

The province will spend $3.6 million to implement the project in the eight schools.
