Boreal Forest Legal Defence Fundraiser

Feb 13, 2024 | 9:32 AM

Boreal Forest Legal Defence are hosting a fundraiser and a teach-in at Big River.

See the poster for details.

On February 17, the Saskatchewan Forest Protection Network and the Big River Forest Advocates will host a teach-in, community supper and musical kitchen party.

The event hopes to raise awareness and funds to support a legal action aimed at stopping the clearcut logging of culturally important and ecologically sensitive areas.

Spokesperson Cathy Sproule says, “The government is not complying with the Forest Resources Management Act, which calls for a balance among all the many interests in the forest.”

The teach-In features Halifax’s award-winning investigative journalist, Joan Baxter, who will speak about the disturbing history and international reach of Paper Excellence, the company that now owns the Prince Albert and Meadow Lake pulp mills, as well as numerous other mills across Canada.

Voices from Saskatchewan’s north will include Dave Rondeau, local historian; Doug Racine, Metis lawyer; Miriam Korner, founder of For Peat’s Sake; Katelyn Harvey environmentalist; and Cathy Sproule, organizer of the legal action.

Well-known local musicians are supporting the cause. Wilma Groenen, Aryn Murray, Raven She Hollers, Frank Klassen (Wrong Johnsons), and the Great Fuss will perform at the Kitchen Party. There will also be displays, food, and a children’s activity area.
