Youth skiers wanting to hone their skills had the opportunity to do so on Saturday during the Prince Albert Ski League’s second annual skills day.

Thirty youth skiers made the trek to the Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre at Little Red River Park to take part in the event where athletes had the chance to practice and test out their freestyle skiing skills, such as basic skiing and top speed as well as their big air and rail-grinding capabilities.

“We set up stations throughout the hill to work on our skiing skills,” explained the club’s president Amanda Hounjet. “We have a speed run, dual moguls, rails, and air, where the kids are learning to do box rails and big air, and then onto moguls.”

She continued by explaining that the skills day was to help prepare the skiers for the club’s, and the park’s, first-ever competition.

“We’re going to be doing a slopestyle event and we’re cohosting with the Saskatoon Freestyle Club. We’re going to have the slopestyle event [at Little Red] on Saturday, March 10 then on that Sunday, we’re going to Saskatoon to do the moguls event.”

Of the 30 kids who attended the skills day, the majority of them came from the lessons that the club hosts regularly on Mondays and Tuesdays, something that Hounjet said she was happy to see.

“It’s all about community and sport, what better way to show that than here on the hill during this beautiful day.”

Along with the large group, five coaches were on hand to help out including three from P.A. and two from Saskatoon.

To go with the skiing, the kids were also treated to a pizza lunch and hot chocolate, along with a treat bag and hot dog supper to wrap up the day.
