Teams ready to rumble for Special Olympic Floor Hockey Tournament in P.A.

Feb 9, 2024 | 10:00 AM

The Special Olympics are set to take over Carlton High School this weekend as six teams from across the province are ready to make noise at Prince Albert’s Floor Hockey Tournament.

The tournament will be welcoming six teams in this year’s installment, including one each from Humboldt and Saskatoon and two from both Prince Albert and Regina. One of the teams also traveling from the Queen City is Team Saskatchewan, who will represent the province in Calgary at the 2024 Canada Winter Games that begin later this month.

“It’s always exciting welcoming other communities here to P.A.,” said Prince Albert’s Special Olympic head coach Tyler Kowalski. “It gives our athletes a chance to compete and to get to know where they stand against other athletes from around the province.”

A similar tournament was held in Prince Albert last year.

Although not a provincial championship, this year’s installment will see around 80 athletes along with 15 coaches making the trek to Hockeytown North where the excitement levels are said to be just as high as last year.

“They’re excited,” continued Kowalski. “Always exciting to get a chance to see their peers who they don’t get to see very often. Whenever they get together, they normally have a great time.”

Kowalski added that the weekend also won’t all be about playing hockey.

On Saturday afternoon, all of the teams will head to the Art Hauser Centre to watch the Mann-Northway Northern Bears take on the Weyburn Gold Wings and later that same night, a dance is scheduled to take place.

All games for the tournament are set to happen at Carlton from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and again from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
