Musicians wanted for CAMP Teachers in Schools program

Feb 7, 2024 | 5:00 PM

The Community Arts Mentorship Program (CAMP) is looking for musicians to join its Teachers in Schools program.

That’s according to executive director LJ Tyson, who explained ideal candidates should aspire to give back to communities, while gaining work experience in the field of music instruction. Those interested should be willing to work in remote and underserved Indigenous communities and want to expand their practice by being paid to administer music instruction in an educational setting.

CAMP is seeking to hire six Saskatchewan musicians through a partnership with Canada Council for the Arts.

“What that entails is they will go into schools with our instructors and learn how to teach instruments, how to engage with students and what CAMP is doing to try and make the world a better place,” Tyson said.

“We want them to kind of be in line with our values and that’s just really wanting to give back to the community, wanting to share their musical expertise with students and really just be a community-minded individual.”

Such programming has already been delivered in communities such as Beauval, Hall Lake, La Ronge, Stanley Mission and Sucker River. Students were given the opportunity to learn instruments like the guitar, banjo, fiddle, as well as participate in voice lessons.

Tyson noted those interested in applying don’t need to be skilled in any specific instrument. He added it’s hoped musicians in remote and Indigenous communities considering applying, but applications are open to all Saskatchewan musicians.

“We are currently doing interviews to try and fill those spots, so this is our second call out for potential mentees,” Tyson said.

He also mentioned CAMP is interested in starting the programming as soon as possible, so those interested should not wait to apply. Resumes can be sent to campsaskarts@gmail.com.

In recent years, CAMP has been the recipient of multiple Saskatchewan Music Awards for Industry Achievement. In 2023, CAMP won Non-Profit of the Year at the Tri-Community Awards Gala.
