Latest job action by teachers forcing Central Sask. school divisions to get creative

Feb 5, 2024 | 4:56 PM

School Divisions across Saskatchewan are coming up with plans to overcome the latest job action organized by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF).

The union has announced teachers will not provide noon-hour supervision on Thursday as part of their job action against the Saskatchewan Government.

According to the STF, many teachers do the supervision voluntarily but have been told to leave the school instead.

They also specified it’s up to each school division to come up with an alternate plan.

In Prince Albert, the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (Sask Rivers) is tasking each of its schools to create an alternate lunch supervision plan.

If they can’t come up with an appropriate plan, they will message parents and guardians ahead of time.

They’re also recommending students go home for lunch if possible.

As for the Prince Albert Catholic School Division, support staff and non-STF staff will be responsible for noon-hour supervision at elementary schools.

High school students will be required to go home or find alternate arrangements for the lunch break.

In North Battleford, the Living Sky School Division has announced plans to shrink the student’s lunch break to 30 minutes. Support staff and volunteers will provide supervision during this time.

Because of this, the end of the school day will instead happen at 3:02 p.m.

The North East School Division will also be letting students out early; however, this is so teachers can take their duty-free period at the end of the workday.

The Creighton School Division is ensuring families they’ll have a contingency plan in place that won’t cause any disruptions for students.

The Horizon School Division is encouraging students to go home for the break. They say that a plan will be in place to ensure the safety of the students who can’t leave the school during this time.

As for Northern Saskatchewan, the Northern Lights School Division is telling families to contact their schools as each has its own plan

Northwest School Division, Light of Christ Catholic School Division, and Sakewew High School have all been contacted by paNOW but have not responded at this time.
