Second rotating teacher strike to involve Northern Sask. & Saskatoon area

Feb 4, 2024 | 11:36 AM

The second round of rotating strikes has been announced by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF).

On Wednesday, teachers in and around Saskatoon and Northern Saskatchewan will hit the picket line as Creighton School Division, Northern Lights School Division, Prairie Spirit School Division, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, and Saskatoon Public Schools have been chosen as the next districts to take part.

Conseil des écoles fransaskoises schools and Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre teachers who work at a school or regional campus within the boundaries of the aforementioned school divisions will also be included.

“The government thinks they can wait us out, but they have failed to account for the most important factors. Teachers are fed up and are united. There is strong and growing support for the action we’re taking because students, parents, businesses, and communities know we all deserve better,” said Samantha Becotte, president of the STF.

“Solving the crisis in our publicly funded schools doesn’t only give today’s students what they need, it benefits all of us. Saskatchewan’s economy is strong, and today’s students are the workforce of tomorrow. Employers want to be able to hire talented and educated employees from within the province.”

The strike will involve around 4,300 teachers and will affect classes for roughly 65,000 students.

It follows the first rotating strike that had teachers from Horizon School Division, Prairie South, Prince Albert Catholic Schools, Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, Light of Christ Catholic School Division, Living Sky School Division, and Sakewew High School in North Battleford walk off the job this past week.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education continues to say they’re not budging on its stance regarding teacher salaries and class complexities despite the strikes.
