Beating Addiction

Flin Flon fundraiser aims to help curb drug and alcohol addiction

Jan 25, 2024 | 4:00 PM

Snowmobilers from across the Prairies will ride to Flin Flon in March for the 2024 Sled for Eternity fundraiser, raising money for people who have been impacted by drug and alcohol addiction.

The event is scheduled for March 9 and all of the money raised will go to Adult and Teen Challenge which has offices across the country.

“It’s a fairly long ride that we have chosen for this route…the trails are just amazing up here,” said organizer Ben Luc. “They’re pretty quick, we’ve got about a 270-kilometre route and it actually starts in Flin Flon here.”

“The last couple years has just been amazing,” Luc continued. “People have just been happy about the conditions of the trails and just an amazing ride and a great time of people getting together and meeting new people who are passionate about the same thing, whether it’s snowmobiling or helping people in recovery. Some of the stories that come out of these events are just really cool.”

Luc is from Nipawin and expects a lot of riders to come from Saskatchewan. He said they’re aiming to raise $120,000 this year, a slightly higher target than last year.

“We did well last year and we’re believing that we can hit our target again this year,” he said.

Luc emphasized the annual event is more about tackling an important issue rather than snowmobiling.

“If anybody out there is struggling with addiction and wants to get out of it, that’s really what this whole thing is about,” he said. “It’s not about snowmobiling, it’s not about this that or whatever. We are in the business of putting hope within reach of every addict, every community, every family, and provide freedom from the impact of life-controlling addictions.”

“And if there’s anybody at all out there that is struggling with any kind of addiction, we want them to know that there’s hope, there’s help, and we are here to help.”

Luc added that it’s best to register online in advance of the event, and donations are also accepted online.
