‘Students are falling through the cracks’: P.A. teachers take to streets on second one-day strike

The sidewalks along one of Prince Albert’s busiest roads were filled with teachers protesting against the lack of progress in contract negotiations with the province.

Hundreds of educators gathered in front of MLA Alana Ross’ office and walked up and down 15 Street East during the second one-day strike organized by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation (STF).

Talks have stalled due to the union wanting to have class size and complexity included in negotiations, something the province does not.

Jean-Marc Belliveau, president of Prince Albert and Area Teacher’s Association, told paNOW they’re doing this to ensure their message gets heard.

“We want better education for the kids so we’re out here fighting in the cold,” he said while joking that his face was frozen.

In Belliveau’s opinion, class size and complexity should be included in the negotiations. He explained the longer the province refuses to acknowledge this, the more job action will happen.

“It’s up to the government at this point,” he said.

One of the many taking part was Marcie Windsor, a Grade 3 teacher at W.J. Berezowsky Public School. She said additional support for students isn’t a want, but a must.

“Students are falling through the cracks, and I believe we can do better but we need that extra support to help.”

Meanwhile, the rally may have been cold, but it wasn’t quiet.

Throughout the four hours that teachers were on the picket line, car horns could be heard blaring non-stop.

“I really feel that Prince Albert wants what’s best for the kids in the classrooms,” added Belliveau.

The STF has yet to announce when additional job action could happen or what it would look like. Before each strike, the union held a five-day countdown, so families had some time to prepare.
