Grain elevator in Loreburn burns to the ground

A part of Saskatchewan’s history was lost over the weekend as the grain elevator in Loreburn burned to the ground.

According to the Davidson Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters found the grain elevator burning when they arrived on the scene on Sunday morning, and they worked defensively to keep the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings and the town of Loreburn itself.

“The best possible outcome happened as the wind was calm and the wind direction kept the smoke and hot embers away from the town,” the fire department said in a statement shared on social media.

“As the grain elevator burned it candled rather than falling over and causing fire spread.”

Ultimately, the fire department said the blaze reduced the elevator “to only a pile of burning rubble.”

No injuries were reported, the fire department added, and the fire was contained to the footprint of the elevator.

The fire department thanked the Loreburn and Elbow departments for their efforts during the blaze, which Davidson assisted with through a mutual aid agreement. The Davidson department also extended its gratitude to the people who brought food, water, and coffee to the firefighters during the call.
