Muskoday murder case proceeding to preliminary inquiry

Jan 20, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Roughly seven months after a man was found dead at Muskoday First Nation, the resulting court case is showing signs of moving forward.

Chance Smith, who is facing a charge of second degree murder in the death of Wade Dreaver, has a preliminary inquiry hearing date scheduled for June 11.

The case was discussed Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

At the hearing in June, the judge will get the opportunity to hear the Crown’s evidence and will decide if it’s strong enough to commit the case for trial. The judge will also look at whether the charge fits the crime or if perhaps a lesser charge of manslaughter is better suited.

The investigation in June, 2023, determined an altercation and argument had occurred between the accused and the victim at a home on the First Nation.

Dreaver, who was 27, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this stage of the court proceedings, no pleas have been entered.
