Raiders kick off three-in-three weekend with rare matchup against Royals

Jan 12, 2024 | 12:12 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (18-18-0-3) are set to welcome their final B.C. Division opponent to Hockeytown North on Friday night when they go head-to-head with the Victoria Royals (23-14-2-2) at the Art Hauser Centre.

The Raiders come into the night having picked up a point in their last contest, falling 6-5 in overtime to the Vancouver Giants. Before the loss, P.A. were the victors in another game that went to a shootout against the Saskatoon Blades, winning 2-1.

Since returning from the Christmas break on Dec. 27, the Raiders boast a 1-3-0-1 record while the Royals have been steady.

Victoria is 3-1-2-0 coming out of the break which includes four consecutive overtime games, resulting in two wins and two losses. Prince Albert marks the fourth stop on the Royals’ Eastern road trip as the islanders have yet to win on the Prairies, falling to Regina and Brandon in overtime earlier this week before getting shut out by Moose Jaw on Wednesday.

The Raiders and Royals met just once last season when P.A. escaped B.C.’s capital with a 6-3 win. Friday is also the final game in which the Raiders will face off with a B.C. opponent this season. Prince Albert is 1-3 against the B.C. Division this season.

Following tonight, the Raiders will embark on a five-game road stretch with their first stop in Regina against the Pats on Saturday followed by a visit to Brandon to play the Wheat Kings on Sunday.

Who to Watch

Raider rookie Oli Chenier was all over the scoresheet in P.A.’s last contest, netting his first career hat-trick while also potting an assist. His four-point performance was enough to earn him the game’s first star and the Canadian Hockey League’s first star on Tuesday. The Winnipeg-born winger is now up to seven goals and six assists in his first major junior campaign.

Centre Harrison Lodewyk also had a multi-point effort against Vancouver, collecting a pair of assists on two of Chenier’s three goals. It was the Red Deer product’s fourth two-assist game this season as he’s now matched a career-high in points with 18 (3 goals, 15 assists) and will look to surpass that mark against Victoria.

Veteran forward Sloan Stanick also found the scoresheet versus the Giants, netting a goal in the third period. The pride of Rapid City, Man. has led the Raiders in points for most of the season and he’s now up to 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists) on the year. Additionally, the marker helped the 20-year-old hit the 170 career point mark as he also sits two assists shy of 100.
