Raiders welcome Giants for rare inter-conference matchup

Jan 9, 2024 | 1:21 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders (18-18-0-2) are looking for back-to-back wins on Tuesday night as they host the Vancouver Giants (15-21-2-0) for their only meeting of the season.

The Raiders enter the contest after snapping a four-game skid in their last game which was a big 2-1 shootout win against the rivals Saskatoon Blades. The win ended a losing streak and pulled P.A. back to .500 in the standings where they sit eighth in the East, just one game ahead of Calgary.

Meanwhile, the Giants are visiting the Art Hauser Centre for the first time since Oct. 8, 2019, which ended in a 4-2 victory for the Raiders. So far on their East Division road trip, Vancouver is one for one following their 4-0 shutout win in Brandon on Saturday. The win was the second in a row after the Giants downed Calgary 5-4 on Wednesday.

Over the past five seasons, the Raiders haven’t lost to the Giants albeit they have only met twice in the regular season with their most recent date happening last season which saw Prince Albert prevail 4-1.

Following tonight, the Raiders will welcome the Victoria Royals on Friday night for their lone meeting this season. The game will also be the Royals’ first visit to Hockeytown North since Jan. 29, 2020.

How the league stands ahead of tonight’s inter-conference matchup.

Who to Watch

Newly signed Turner McMillen has impressed through his first two games with the Raiders, scoring once. The pride of Carievale, Sask. filled the final overage spot on P.A.’s roster and spent time in Kelowna earlier this season where he netted four points in six games. The 20-year-old has spent his entire time in the WHL with the Rockets, potting 69 career points in 158 games.

Raider rookie Oli Chenier netted the game-winner in the seventh round of the shootout against Saskatoon on Saturday, adding to his already good first campaign. The forward from Winnipeg has four goals and five assists through 29 games and is one point away from surpassing the 10-point mark.
