Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN) Chief Joyce McLeod is describing Arnold Naytowhow as one of the most kindhearted people she’s ever met and a well respected leader.

Naytowhow, 63, who was elected to council last year, passed away in hospital last Sunday.

The funeral is scheduled to take place Wednesday afternoon at MLCN’s Senator Allen Bird Memorial School gym.

Prior to being elected to council last year, Naytowhow previously served two terms on council from 2005 to 2011 and has looked after portfolios related to housing and social development.

After 2011, Naytowhow returned to school to complete his education as an addictions worker.

Moving to Saskatoon in 2015, Naytowhow returned to his home community in 2023.

In addition to his work in mental health, Naytowhow was a strong advocate for Indian Residential School Survivors.

He was also very close to the church and held various roles including lay reader.

Naytowhow was also a passionate hockey fan and loved the Calgary Flames.

Chief McLeod said she’ll greatly miss Naytowhow, and while acknowledging a byelection will take place, said they don’t want to rush it and no details have been discussed at this time.
