Reflecting on the experience of recording a music video in less than three takes, Joshua Stumpf says it was both fun and very comfortable.

The roughly three-minute long video for the song “The Way You Love Me”, featuring Stumpf and his girlfriend Mercy Glover, was uploaded on Thursday to various forms of social media.

“My phone has being blowing up for the most part,” Stumpf replied, when asked by paNOW about the response thus far.

He also explained the song, which was written by him specifically for the Sask One Mic recording session, is about a couples’ admiration for each other.

Noting the simplicity of having a microphone placed between himself and his girlfriend, Stumpf said when discussing the project with Funky Moose Audio, it was pitched they would help pay for the costs, in exchange for some advertising.

And that’s the reason why the Funky Moose logo can be prominently seen throughout the video, including on the shirt worn by Stumpf.

“It benefitted the whole lot,” Stumpf said.

Raised in Prince Albert, Stumpf moved to Saskatoon in late 2022 and recalls attending as many open mic sessions as he could. It was also during this time he performed on stage at the Capital Music Club, and the owners liked his song so much, they pitched the idea of working together on a bigger project.

“That turned out so well we decided why don’t we do a couple more, and why don’t we do it like an EP,” he said.

Stumpf’s first single, “Drink me a lullaby’, was released last September and has been gaining traction on the indie radio charts in Canada and the U.S.

“It’s been performing really, really, really well for a debut single. I was really surprised and so I’m very excited to see what the other ones are gonna do.”

Mark Poppen with Funky Moose Audio told paNOW he was very happy with how the video turned out and hopes to do more like it in the future.

“We have our own version of a One Mic, but it’s tied to our podcast called “The Sit Down Podcast”, where we have conversations with artists and release some of their live performances. Being that Matt and Simon (One Mic) are sound engineers and producers, we felt the One Mic sessions are a step above what we do in terms of production, which is why we wanted to get Josh and Mercy on one of the releases,” he explained.
