Pine Grove inmate declared deceased at hospital

A 23-year-old woman who was on remand at Pine Grove Correctional Centre has died, the province said in a news release.

Family members confirmed to paNOW that the woman is Tatianna Custer and court records show she had pending charges in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

According to the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, Custer was found unresponsive in a common area at Pine Grove just before 1 pm Wednesday.

Staff started life-saving measures and called EMS who took her to Victoria Hospital where she was declared deceased just after 2 pm.

Custer was the spouse of Drexlr Whitehead, who was killed in a homicide in Prince Albert in 2021 and a young son survives her.

Prince Albert Police will be investigating, and the ministry will conduct an internal investigation.

By law, in custody deaths are also subject to Coroner’s inquests, with dates set by the coroner’s office.
